To open, hold the bottom with one hand and grasp the lid with the other. A twist of the wrist swings the securely attached lid away from the box and reveals the compartment inside.

this box looks nothing like the picture. it is stained really dark brown and also is not 4.5 inches across in either direction. I will be returning it.
