This hand-woven "dhurrie" from India has all the qualities a Montessori work rug needs: the tight weave provides children with a smooth work surface; the rugs lie flat, roll up easily, and stand upright in a rack.
With hemmed ends, there is no fringe to fray or knot. 100% cotton. Machine wash cold, hang to dry; expect some shrinkage. Natural (off-white) color; some variations should be expected. 42" x 28.
This is a heavy duty rug. I am very pleased with both rugs I purchased and would recommend for puzzles board games legos etc. I had my boys open these rugs first on Christmas Day. It helped them recognize and respect each of their personal spaces and individual gifts.
Being a homeschooling mom who is devoted to the Montessori method, I'm on a tight budget for school supplies. I had been through several cheap rugs before I finally decided that the rug was as important a tool in the classroom as any other. I'm really happy with this purchase and so are my daughters.
I am very impressed with the quality of these rugs. The textured weave is even and soft to the touch. Because of the factory smell of the fibers, I chose to machine wash (front loader) in cold water when received and let them air dry on chairs. A warm iron helped to reshape them into a rectangle. Now they have a neutral cotton smell. In use, the ends line up wonderfully when rolled and they lay nice and flat while doing work. I can't recommend these rugs enough for their construction and value!
Actually, I bought these because I have allergies and must avoid carpeting, but I want at least a bit of covering on some cold floor areas, like beside my bed. It's very difficult to find something washable that doesn't have dust-catching pile and fringe. These fit the bill very nicely. One rug, however, had a quite noticeable flaw in the binding on one side, and it was too costly to send it back, so I fixed it as best I could. Without that, five-stars.
The tight weave is nice, but it causes the rug to curl up at the corners. The rug should be a couple of inches longer to accomodate the nuber rods with their matching cards.
Tightly woven rug that unrolls to a very nice work surface. The children roll the rug with ease. Large size is nice for small group work or larger jobs but go with the smaller size for most jobs.
