I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for something for 4+ year olds. My daughter created shapes, patterns and some letters. It's wonderful for working on fine motor skills and as a sensorial activity. It also helps with dexterity and strengthening fingers and hands. The product has 16 pegs on it and a smooth birch wood finish. The rubber bands come in five different colors, which reinforce color recognition. Because there are 250 rubber bands, though, make sure to have a plan on keeping them contained, especially if there are smaller children around. They are a choking hazard and they might fly if the rubber band doesn't quite make it around the intended pegs.
I remember playing with one of these as a child. It's a great independent activity for children as there is no right or wrong. And while they are experimenting they are in inevitably learning about shapes and patterns and using fine motor skills. My only regret is that as solid wood always seems best, I decided to invest the extra money for the wood, without recognizing that there are actually less pegs. In retrospect, I regret not purchasing the pressed wood version that is almost three times less expensive, especially as I have a stack of cards with patterns to imitate as another way of playing with this, and they can't be used because of the limited pegs.
